Active Directory Home Lab: Joining Multiple Windows Client-PCs

Building an Active Directory home lab is one of the most effective ways to develop hands-on system administration skills. In this lab setup, Windows Server 2022 was installed on a virtual machine and configured as a Domain Controller. After setting up Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), a Group Policy Object (GPO) was created to centrally manage domain users and computers. Additionally, Windows 11 and multiple client PCs were installed on separate virtual machines and successfully joined to the domain, simulating a real-world enterprise network environment.

The first stage of this lab involved installing Windows Server 2022 on a virtual machine using virtualization software. After installation, the server was configured with a static IP address and renamed appropriately before installing the Active Directory Domain Services role. Once promoted to a Domain Controller, a new domain was created, forming the foundation of the Active Directory environment. This allowed centralized authentication and directory management for all connected devices.

After the domain was operational, the next step was creating a Group Policy Object using the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC). Group Policy plays a crucial role in enterprise IT environments because it allows administrators to enforce security policies, user restrictions, and configuration settings across all domain-joined computers. In this lab, a GPO was created and linked to the appropriate Organizational Unit (OU). Policies such as password complexity requirements, login message configuration, and desktop restrictions were tested to understand how centralized control works in Active Directory.

To simulate a production-like setup, Windows 11 and multiple client PCs were installed as separate virtual machines. Each client machine was configured with proper network settings and joined to the Domain Controller. Joining a computer to the domain allows it to authenticate users against Active Directory rather than relying on local accounts. This process demonstrated how centralized identity management simplifies administration and improves security.

Once the Windows 11 clients were joined to the domain, domain user accounts were used to log in. This allowed testing of Group Policy application and verification that the configured policies were enforced correctly. Commands such as gpupdate /force and gpresult were used to confirm that policies were successfully applied. Testing multiple clients helped demonstrate how policies replicate and apply consistently across all domain-joined systems.

This Active Directory home lab provides valuable hands-on experience in Windows Server administration, Group Policy management, and domain-based networking. It closely mirrors real enterprise infrastructure and builds practical skills required for IT support, helpdesk, and system administrator roles. By installing Windows Server 2022, configuring Active Directory, creating Group Policy Objects, and joining Windows 11 clients to the domain, this lab demonstrates a complete foundational setup for understanding centralized network management in modern Windows environments.
