Mountain of Memories: A Father-Son Bond at Mount Ngungun

High above the lush hinterlands of Queensland, with a veil of soft clouds overhead and the breath of nature all around, two spirited adventurers found themselves atop the iconic summit of Mount Ngungun. The sixth tallest of the Glass House Mountains and arguably the most accessible. This photo captures more than just a scenic view. It immortalizes a shared moment of connection, humour and achievement between father and son. Two kindred spirits who set out not just to conquer a mountain but to create a memory that would echo for years to come.

Mount Ngungun, rising to 253 metres offers a relatively moderate climb that rewards visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic plugs  including the unmistakable peak of Mount Coonowrin in the backdrop of this very frame. The landscape stretches endlessly into the distance a mosaic of forests, farms and hidden valleys that whisper stories of time long before ours. This ancient land is rich with Indigenous history with the Glass House Mountains holding great spiritual significance to the Gubbi Gubbi people. For those who make the ascent it’s not just a walk up a trail, it’s a journey through culture, time and soul.

In the image, chris – me, myself and I, in his signature cap turned backwards, a playful smirk on his face  extends his arm with perfect comedic timing using perspective to ‘point’ the distant mountain peak. His son, standing further back in a Spider-Man shirt and sunglasses, flexes his muscles triumphantly as if to declare himself the hero of this cinematic scene. The contrast between the majestic natural formation and the creative human spirit brings a sense of lighthearted joy to the powerful wilderness surrounding them.

But there’s more than silliness here,  there’s meaning. This photo tells a deeper story of bonding, of shared goals and the beauty of spending time in nature together. Whether it was the climb filled with laughter and stories or the quiet moments when the breeze swept across the ledge and all they could do was take it in.  This was a day where digital distractions disappeared and life unfolded the way it should simple, honest and full of wonder.

As clouds painted shifting shadows across the valley, the duo likely took time to reflect. For the father, perhaps pride not just in the climb but in the young man his son is becoming. For the son, admiration for a father who leads by example, embraces fun and makes every adventure feel like magic.

Mount Ngungun may not be the highest peak in the Glass House range but for these two it was the summit of an unforgettable day.  A mountaintop moment frozen in time. And as they descended together, the mountain behind them, they carried not just photos on their phones but stories in their hearts.

"Have you ever climbed a mountain that left you speechless at the summit, would Mount Ngungun be your next unforgettable adventure ?"
