In this environment, a domain controller running Windows Server 2022 manages several domain-joined client computers. Administrative control is implemented through Active Directory Group Policy to regulate how users access internet resources within the network.
Active Directory: Desktop Wallpaper Group Policy Management
To make all users’ desktop wallpaper the same using Group Policy in Windows Server 2022, you first need to prepare the wallpaper image by saving it as a JPG or BMP file in a shared folder on your server, such as \YourServer\Wallpapers\company.jpg. Make sure that Domain Users have Read permission to access the file. Next, open Group Policy Management on your Domain Controller. Expand your domain, then right-click the Organizational Unit (OU) where your user accounts are located and select “Create a GPO in this domain, and Link it here.” Name the policy something like “Desktop Wallpaper Policy.” After creating it, right-click the new GPO and choose Edit. Navigate to User Configuration → Policies → Administrative Templates → Desktop → Desktop, then double-click “Desktop Wallpaper.” Set the policy to Enabled, enter the UNC path of the wallpaper file, choose the preferred wallpaper style (Fill, Stretch, Center, or Fit), and click Apply and OK. Finally, run gpupdate /force on client computers or restart them to apply the policy. Once completed, all users within that OU will have a standardized desktop wallpaper when they log in.
Active Directory Security Incident: Account Sharing, Social Engineering and Simultaneous Logins
William recently became curious about how his new Active Directory account worked. Out of curiosity, he shared his username and password with a friend and asked them to log in using his account on a separate computer.
At the same time, William logged in to his own account from his Windows 10 Pro client PC, while his friend logged in using the same credentials on a different machine running Windows 11 Enterprise.
Chris, the system administrator, noticed suspicious activity while reviewing the Active Directory security logs. He detected that William’s account was logged in simultaneously from two different client PCs, which violated company security policies.
As a precautionary security measure, Chris immediately disabled William’s Active Directory account to prevent further unauthorised access. Upon investigation, it was determined that William had used social engineering by persuading another person to log in on his behalf using his credentials.
This incident highlighted the importance of proper credential handling and reinforced the organisation’s security policies regarding account sharing and unauthorised access.
